MACBETH starring Alan Cumming

July 14, 2013 Posted by suefairview

On Tuesday at 7 PM my mom took me to see The National Theatre of Scotland’s Production of MACBETH by William Shakespeare starring Alan Cumming and Chris Kipiniak, Jenny Sterlin and Brendan Titley at the Ethyl Barrymore Theatre.

We had fair seats in row B in the mezzanine. The theatre was about 90% full. But to appreciate Mr. Cumming’s performance of almost all of the parts, one had to be very familiar with the play.

Mr. Cummings gave his performance his all and it certainly was a tour de force. I got the feeling that I was watching greatness unfolding and it was mesmerizing.

In this rendition of Shakespeare’s play, Macbeth is bloody and taken into a sanitorium chamber by two attendents, one male and one female. They take evidence samples from him, as if he has committed a murder and then take all of his clothing, having him change into whites. He is left alone; reciting the play.

Mr. Cumming displayed a full range of emotions; he is such a talented actor. His Scottish accent surely didn’t hurt either! His performance was simply brilliant.

The show ended on Saturday.
